Legal Analysis and Research module description

Introduction

In the Legal Analysis and Research module you will be able to choose a question to research and advise on from several options. All questions are cross disciplinary, which means they incorporate several possible topic areas from the GDL in addition to some new areas.

As in practice you will be presented with facts. You will have to work out what areas of law are relevant and draw together advice from more than one topic.

How is the module taught?

You will carry out the research independently over the summer. You will be able to submit an outline of your research to a supervisor for feedback, and you will have the opportunity of up to two hours one-to-one supervision.

Assessment

At the end of the summer you will present your advice and findings in a 30-minute oral examination with a small panel of two assessors. This will consist of:

  • your 20-minute oral presentation
  • 10 minutes of questions from the assessors

This is designed to prepare you for practice, because solicitors and barristers are frequently called upon to make oral presentations to colleagues and clients. It will also help prepare you for the LPC and the BVC in which there are several oral assessments.

Module dates

This module will be available from June 2008.
