Summer School modules

Case Analysis

This session will introduce you to analysing legal cases. We typically focus on one case which may be selected from any of the core areas such as crime or tort. You will be given a copy of this case either to read in advance of the Summer School, or on the day of the class and you will be asked questions about the case to test your understanding.

Law of Obligation (contract and tort)

In tort you will be taken through the general principles of defamation, or find out how to claim for post-traumatic stress suffered as a result of someone’s negligence. Tort also covers claims made as a reult of someone being affected by "nuisance", so you may be given an exercise in which you have to advise a client who has a noisy neighbour.

Introduction to European law

In European Union law you will be introduced to the main institutions of the European Community and the sources of this branch of law. Individual areas within this topic include the free movement of persons.

Public Law (constitutional and criminal law)

In constitutional law classes you will be asked to consider whether the UK has a constitution and, if so, what kind of a constitution it is. You will also be introduced to the area of human rights and find out which rights are protected by the European Convention of Human Rights. In crime classes you are introduced to murder (the theory – not the practice!) or property offences such as theft, robbery and burglary.

Introduction to Advocacy

A chance to try out your advocacy skills in front of your class! We teach you the basic skills of advocacy and make it as non-scary as possible in a mock trial. The trial could, for example, be on offences of murder or robbery.

Legal research

We will teach you how to find statutes and legal authorities online and introduce you to the structure of cases and statutes.

Legal  skills

These are interactive sessions giving you the opportunity to try out some basic legal skills. You may, for example, be given some exercises on how to interpret a statute. We will introduce you to the skills required and you will also get the opportunity to meet other students on the programme.

Optional

Court visit

Students are given the opportunity to spend some time in court (in the public gallery – no commission of offences required!). In London we will be visiting the Old Bailey and/or the Royal Courts of Justice. We cannot predict in advance what we will see, but will try our hardest to find some interesting cases.

Daily careers sessions

There is a variety of optional careers talks ranging from the very basics – the difference between solicitors and barristers, to the specific – how to fill out a training contract application or apply for a pupillage. You will also hear from practitioners about life in practice.

Legal tours of London*

Optional guided walking tour of legal London by a blue badge tour guide. The tour will go past buildings such as the Royal Courts of Justice and the some of the Inns of Court and will last approximately one and a half hours. Please wear comfortable shoes!

Structure of the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)

This is an optional talk designed for students who are considering studying the GDL in the future and who wish to know more about the structure and content of the programme.

*This option is only available at the Summer School in London (Waterloo)
